Dowd YMCA Youth Basketball registraion open

The Dowd YMCA 2012 Youth Basketball League registration is open until November 1.

Registration is open to boys and girls ages 5 to 13.

Register now, officials say space is limited.

The Dowd YMCA has a great group of volunteer coaches/parents, some of whom have been with the program for over 30 years.

The YMCA said they are looking forward to an exciting season, and would love to have you be apart of it!

Wingate University names first women's lacrosse coach

WINGATE, NC (Jeff Atkinson/Wingate University) - Capturing the enthusiasm of America's fastest growing high school sport, Wingate University on Thursday named Caline Olmsted as its first women's lacrosse coach.

This will be Wingate's 20th intercollegiate team.  The University already fields a men's lacrosse team.

Athletic director Steve Poston told a news conference Wingate had been considering adding women's lacrosse for several years but the timing is perfect now.

Next year, it's one of four sports the South Atlantic Conference is adding.  And Poston said, the growth of women's lacrosse in high schools in our area has been dramatic.

Olmsted's credentials are impressive. 

She was a two-time All America at Duke University and a member of the USA women's lacrosse national team. 

Olmsted coached at Davidson College as an assistant and was head coach for four years at Bucknell University in Lewisbur

CATS WILL TAKE YOU TO THE NASCAR BANK OF AMERICA 500

CHARLOTTE, NC - The Charlotte Area Transit System (CATS) will provide extra bus service during NASCAR’s Bank of America 500 race on Saturday, October 13.

Race fans can take advantage of CATS’ increased service on route 79X Concord Mills Express to Charlotte Motor Speedway for the race.

Extra service will start at noon, with departures every 20 minutes from the Charlotte Transportation Center (CTC). The last bus will leave the CTC at 6 p.m.

There are additional pick up points at the NASCAR Hall of Fame and near many of the major Uptown hotels. Round trip fare is only $8.

Both drop-off and pick-up locations at Charlotte Motor Speedway will be near the track’s main entrance.

2,000 Student-Athletes Screened at Heart of a Champion Day Events

Nearly 2,000 local high school student-athletes received free comprehensive athletic screenings at four separate locations this summer at Heart of a Champion Day, a Carolinas HealthCare System program that is thought to be the largest screening of its kind nationwide.     

Comprehensive screenings, including heart, orthopedic and general medical checks, took place in Mecklenburg, Lincoln and Union counties in North Carolina, and in York County, South Carolina.

Cam Newton gets his own bottle of Gatorade

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV)- The Carolina Panthers announced a limited edition bottle of Gatorade featuring star quarterback Cam Newton.

The bottle, which features Newton and the Carolina Panthers on the bottle wrapper, is now available at most retail outlets and all Harris Teeters, the Panthers announced.

So did Gatorade make a special Cammy Cam Juice to put in the bottle?

Apparently not, The Panthers say it's just regular Gatorade inside that plastic bottle.

Rotary Club of North Mecklenburg hosts 23rd Annual Charity Golf Tournament

The Rotary Club of North Mecklenburg announces their 23rd Annual Charity Golf Tournament Monday, October 1, at 12 p.m.

The tournament returns this year to Lake Norman's prestigious Peninsula Club in Cornelius, NC. The private course will be in excellent condition with newly installed greens and legendary water views on eleven of the courses eighteen holes.

The format is captain's choice, $100 per golfer, or $400 for a foursome.

The cost includes 18 holes of golf with cart, lunch, beverages, awards dinner banquet, goody bag and prizes. 

All proceeds support Rotary Club of North Mecklenburg projects and charities.
