Deadline to renew business licenses coming in July

MECKLENBURG COUNTY - There are more than 50,000 businesses in Mecklenburg County and most are required to have a local “privilege license,” also known as a business license. All business licenses in Mecklenburg County expire on June 30, 2011.

The Mecklenburg County Tax Collector is preparing to mail notices to these businesses to remind them to renew their privilege licenses, which are due on or before July 1, 2011 to avoid penalties.

Any business operating in Mecklenburg County may be required to obtain a business license. That includes businesses that are home-based, sole proprietorships, partnerships, limited liability companies, corporations, full-time or part-time. Taxes vary depending on the type and size of the business. In most cases, the license tax is based on the amount of gross receipts from the preceding tax year.

New businesses and/or businesses that have not been in business 12 months must provide their projected gross sales for the coming year. The tax rate for businesses that pay based on gross receipts is $0.60 per $1,000 with a minimum tax of $50 and a maximum tax of $10,000.

Excessive force not used after cop was shot by suspect, police say

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) - The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department released Friday the results of an internal investigation which clears officers of any wrongdoing during the arrest of a man accused in an attempted murder two months ago.

According to a statement from CMPD, investigators within the Internal Affairs and Homicide Units have concluded their investigation concerning an excessive use of force allegation involving CMPD officers.

Police officers were called to a shooting on March 20th at the Marathon gas station at 1419 West Trade Street.  Two hours later, police spotted the suspect's car and attempted to stop it near the intersection of Highland Street and Marlowe Avenue.

Malcolm Xavier Springs, 21, jumped from the vehicle and led officers on brief foot pursuit. The report states that Springs was armed with a weapon, and ran into a residential neighborhood on Garibaldi Avenue.

Attorneys turning to social networking for jury selection

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) - If you get called for jury duty and show up at the courthouse, there's a chance that attorneys may find out more about you than you want them to know.

Charlotte Lawyer Paul Whitfield has found a new avenue of getting information about his individuals in the jury pool.

"It's the greatest help that's ever been," he said.

The help offered by social networking sites has come to light in recent days during the high profile case involving little Cayle Anthony.

Attorneys in Florida are interviewing potential jurors, while looking directly at their Facebook pages and Twitter accounts.

"If you've got an associate or a clerk sitting there beside you checking him out while questioning him you can find that he would very frequently tell his real feelings," Whitfield said.

While attorney Paul Whitfield embraces the technology, District attorney Andrew Murray says it comes down to courtroom staffing.

Jury rules in favor of Jon Beason, accuser denied money

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) - A jury announced its verdict Thursday afternoon in the trial of a football player accused of physically assaulting a man at a strip club in Charlotte two years ago.

Gregory Frye sued Carolina Panthers player Jon Beason for battery, intentional infliction of emotional distress and damages.

Frye claimed the football player punched Frye at the Uptown Cabaret near center city in November 2009. Frye said the assault crushed his nasal cavity.

Beason, however, counter sued Frye for malicious prosecution, slander, and damages in the amount of $1.

After five hours of deliberations, the jury announced its verdict just after noon on Thursday.

They ruled in favor of Beason saying he did commit battery against Gregory Frye.  This means Frye will get no money.

Frye was found not liable of malicious prosecution, but he was liable of slander. As a result of his counter suit, Beason was awarded $1.
