USO of NC names Jeff Byers as Ambassador

The USO of NC, the leading organization responsible for lifting the spirits of troops and their families in North Carolina announced Thursday that Jeff Byers, a center for the Carolina Panthers of the National Football League, as their ambassador.

“As a child I remember looking up to soldiers with admiration, thinking of how honorable they were for their service to our country,” said Byers. “I've never lost the appreciation for their sacrifice and am grateful I can finally give back through the USO of NC. It's an honor to be part of such a selfless organization, and serve our troops for all they've given to protect our nation and our freedoms.”

Byers entered the NFL in 2010 and signed with the Carolinas Panthers in 2011.

Discovery Place, Inc. was ranked as the third most visited museum and historic attraction in North Carolina during 2012, according to an annual survey released by Carolina Publishing Associates. 

For the third year in a row, the organization also ranked as the most visited museum and historic attraction in the Charlotte region.

Visited by 762,261 guests in 2012, Discovery Place Inc.’s attendance included visitation to Discovery Place, Charlotte Nature Museum and Discovery Place KIDS–Huntersville.

“Hands-on science centers as educational resources are critical to our future and encourage children to discover science, technology, engineering and math,” said John Mackay, president and CEO, Discovery Place, Inc. “The breadth and depth of what Discovery Place does encompasses exhibits, shows, programming, lab activities, outreach initiatives, professional development, and more.

CMPD Officers awarded MADD Award of Excellence

CMPD Officers awarded MADD Award of Excellence

Two local police officers have been recognized for their work combating drunk driving.

Officers Jonathan Cerdan and Matthew Pressley with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department have been awarded the Mothers Against Drunk Drivers Award of Excellence for their tireless work in DWI enforcement.

MADD presents the awards annually to officers who go above and beyond their job requirements and dedicate themselves to the ideals of law enforcement and criminal justice.

Officer Cerdan was recognized for the critical DWI enforcement training that he created and organized last year within the CMPD.

Officer Pressley was recognized for having made 158 DWI arrests in 2012, which ranks fifth in the state of North Carolina.

Samaritans keep homeless warm with Blanket Drive

Project Change the World is handing out blankets to the homeless this weekend.

All are welcome to bring blankets to distribute to the homeless sleeping on the streets of downtown Charlotte.

Donors should meet in front of the waterfall at 100 South Tryon Street in Charlotte, Saturday February 23, at 8:30 p.m.

Free parking is available at the County Building at 618 North College Street. Nearby Marshall Park offers free parking, as well.

Charlotte lawyer received 2013 National Outstanding Young Lawyer Award

A lawyer from Charlotte was recently honored with a prestigious national award.

Clark C. Walton was awarded the National Outstanding Young Lawyer Award by the American Bar Association Young Lawyers Division during an ABA Midyear Meeting in Dallas, TX, on February 9.
