First United Presbyterian Celebrates Homecoming | Community Spirit

One of the oldest African American congregations in Charlotte is celebrating its homecoming this weekend.

Entitled, "Singing a New Song", the homecoming started on Wednesday and included a community concert featuring 3 church choirs on Thursday evening. On Saturday at 6;30PM, the community is invited to attend a candlelight service as well as a special homecoming service on Sunday at 10:30AM.

The church, located at 406 College Street in uptown Charlotte, traces its roots back to 1866 and was originally established by recently freed slaves.

Rev. Reginald Tuggle, appeared on WBTV News at 4PM and was interviewed by anchor Brigida Mack. Tuggle told her that the homecoming is meant to help shape the future by honorinig the past. "It's a time to look at our legacies and our traditions. Those who have helped frame the church also helped frame the entire community of Charlotte.

The church is on the list of registered historic landmarks and was honored in 2009 with a Legacy Award for its long-time community service.
