Christmas charities are still in need | Community Spirit

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) - With Christmas Day approaching quickly, many charities who give those in need a holiday to remember are still in need themselves.

Two events on Thursday are hoping get enough donations to give a hot meal, clothing and toys to those who aren't able to provide for their children.

Family Dollar's Family Hope Community Foundation is teaming up with the Second Harvest Food Bank of Metrolina and Crisis Assistance Ministry for a Food and Clothing Drive Finale. Second Harvest Director Kay Carter says the need is never 100% met, "In the 19 county region that Second Harvest serves, we're up to 451,000 people now living at or below the poverty level."

About 30 Family Dollar volunteers sorted through all the products at Second Harvest on Spratt Street starting at 2 p.m. to take clothing to Crisis Assistance Ministry.

Kingdom Fellowship Christian Center has partnered with Campus Crest Communities to give away 150 bicycles this Christmas to needy families unable to provide them for their children.

Dozens of recipients showed up to collect their bikes Thursday night. All recipients also attended a special Christmas service after they got their bike.
